Stiff Neck? How to Find the Right Pillow

By · Published on · Updated on

A stiff, aching neck in the morning – and headaches during the day? The wrong pillow is often the cause. After all, a pillow has only one job: to fill the space between your head and the mattress so that the cervical spine keeps its natural line. If it is too high or too low, your neck stays bent all night long.

The Right Pillow Height for Each Sleeping Position

  • Side sleepers need a higher, firmer pillow that fills the gap between the shoulder and the head – keeping the spine straight.
  • Back sleepers are well served by a flatter pillow that gently supports the neck without pushing the head forward.
  • Stomach sleepers need a very flat pillow or none at all, so that the head is not overextended.

Materials at a Glance

  • Viscoelastic foam adapts to the shape of your head and relieves pressure exactly where needed – ideal for tension.
  • Latex is elastic and supportive, with good ventilation.
  • Down and feathers are soft and snug but offer less targeted support.
  • Natural-fiber fillings are particularly good at regulating moisture and temperature.

Pillow and Mattress Belong Together

Even the best pillow is of little use if the mattress does not let your shoulder sink in. Neck and back should therefore always be considered as a whole. How deeply your shoulder sinks in depends on the firmness of the mattress – and on how well the two are matched to each other.

In our showroom, we will work with you to find the pillow that suits your sleeping position and your mattress – for a relaxed neck in the morning.
