Back Pain in the Morning? Your Mattress Could Be to Blame

By · Published on · Updated on

You get up and your back aches – but it eases as the morning goes on? Then there is a good chance that your bed, not your back, is the real problem. A mattress that does not suit your body and sleeping position pulls the spine out of its natural alignment night after night.

How to tell that the mattress is to blame

  • The pain is worst in the morning and eases over the course of the day.
  • You toss and turn a lot at night and cannot find a comfortable position.
  • You sleep noticeably better or worse away from home (hotel, vacation).
  • Your mattress is more than eight to ten years old or has visible dips.

The right firmness

A good mattress provides support where weight rests and yields where the shoulders and pelvis need to sink in. This keeps the spine straight. Too soft, and the body sags. Too firm, and the shoulders and pelvis get no relief. The right firmness depends on body weight, build and preferred sleeping position. So there is no single “correct” firmness – only the one that suits you.

When a new mattress is worth it

As a rule of thumb, most mattresses have lost their supportive properties after eight to ten years. A changing body – weight, age, health – can also mean that the mattress that once fit you perfectly is no longer the right one today.

Our sleep advisor helps you find the right firmness and the right bed system in just a few steps – and in our showroom, you can take your time trying it out.
