Pain while sleeping? These five points could bring relief

I spoke with Patric Beereuter, an experienced chiropractor from Obfelden. I wanted to know from him what he recommends, from a medical and scientific perspective, for people who feel tension and pain after waking up or during sleep.

Here are the five insights I gained from a very friendly and interesting phone conversation with him:

1. Sleep position can cause the pain

For Patric, his patients' sleep position is important for determining the cause of their complaints. People who sleep on their stomach in particular tend to suffer more often from neck and back pain. Those who sleep on their back, on the other hand (and here on a rather firmer mattress), may be able to prevent pain.

2. The right pillow helps you sleep better

The right pillow plays an important role in restful, pain-free sleep. When choosing a pillow, you should go by your preferred sleep position, explains Patric Beereuter. The right pillow helps you avoid a bent spine and effectively prevents tension – an important factor for more restful sleep. For women who sleep on their side, a knee pillow can relieve pressure in the hip and pelvic area.

3. The wrong mattress can be a problem

Although the mattress isn't the main topic in chiropractic treatment, an unsuitable mattress can cause recurring problems. It's especially worth taking a look at the mattress if complaints persist over the course of treatment. If it's old and sagging, for example, it's worth buying a new one. After a few weeks of getting used to it, a new mattress could then bring relief from the pain.

4. Build movement into everyday life

Patric Beereuter emphasises the importance of regular movement in everyday life, especially for people who spend most of their time sitting. Moving around can help release tension and improve your overall state of health.

5. Pain is no longer ignored today

Anyone who seeks medical advice for complaints today doesn't need to feel bad about it. It's true that people in the past may rarely or never have talked about or complained of musculoskeletal pain. Even so, it existed, says Patric Beereuter. On one hand, people used to sit less statically at a desk. On the other, physical work, which was sometimes hard, caused strain from poor posture. Earlier generations tended to ignore such problems more often. Today we live more mindfully and know about the opportunities offered by treating things as early as possible and, above all, by prevention.
