An End to Night Sweats: Causes and What Really Helps

By · Published on · Updated on

You wake up at night, your nightshirt is clinging, your pillow is damp? Night sweats are widespread – and in the vast majority of cases harmless. Often the cause is not your body but simply your bed climate. The good news: a few targeted adjustments are usually enough to improve the problem significantly.

Why we sweat in our sleep

During sleep, the body lowers its core temperature – sweating is a natural cooling mechanism. It only becomes a problem when the heat cannot escape and a warm, humid climate builds up under the duvet. Typical triggers include:

  • Mattresses and toppers made of poorly breathable materials that store heat
  • Synthetic bed linen and duvets that fail to wick away moisture
  • A bedroom that is too warm (16–18 °C is ideal)
  • A duvet that is too warm for the season
  • Late, heavy meals, alcohol, or stress

How to create a cool bed climate

  • Opt for breathable, temperature-regulating materials such as open-cell cold foam or natural latex.
  • Choose bed linen made of natural fibers (cotton, linen, Tencel) that absorbs and releases moisture.
  • Use a duvet suited to the season – a light one in summer, a warmer one in winter.
  • Air out the bedroom thoroughly before going to bed.
  • A topper with climate zones can further improve air circulation.

When to take a closer look

If heavy night sweats appear suddenly, persist, or occur together with other symptoms, talk to your doctor – possible medical causes should then be clarified. In most cases, however, it is the bed system that can easily be improved with the right materials.
