Wake Up Refreshed with These Sleep Gadgets

Sound familiar? You lie awake at night, tossing and turning from one side to the other, desperately searching for sleep that simply will not come (back). Severe and long-lasting sleep disorders are often rooted in psychological strain and should be treated accordingly. After all, those who do not sleep well are less capable and resilient, quickly irritated, and often lacking in drive. But for those who are only occasionally affected by trouble falling or staying asleep, or simply cannot get out of bed in the morning, the industry has a number of solutions on offer. Below, we introduce a selection of sleep gadgets.

EEG Sleep Tracker

Sleep trackers are, in principle, relatively simple. They measure data during sleep and can thus help get to the bottom of possible sleep disorders. Conventional trackers focus mainly on measuring pulse and record how much sleep is obtained overall. EEG trackers, by contrast, worn on the head integrated into a headband, detect the individual sleep phases by measuring brain waves. Sensitive sensors record the movement of brain waves, heart and breathing rate, and sleep duration. In addition, barely audible tones of a certain frequency and duration are generated, which are intended to have a positive effect on sleep quality. The EEG tracker is controlled via an app, to which the data can also be transferred and analyzed.

The measurement results of the EEG sleep tracker are not quite as precise as those of a sleep lab, but the results nevertheless offer insight into sleep behavior and produce more informative data than conventional trackers. However, this gadget requires digging relatively deep into your pocket. EEG trackers are available from around CHF 430.-

Smart Duvet

Imagine peeling yourself out of bed in the morning, and by the time you come back from the bathroom, your bed has made itself, automatically and perfectly. What sounds like science fiction is now actually possible, thanks to a "smart" duvet. Not only can it spread itself out on its own – according to the manufacturer, it also regulates the temperature between the body and the duvet. Preventing cold feet or heavy sweating in this way promotes sleep quality – all night long.

The innovative duvet is brand new on the market and is currently only offered by the start-up Smartduvet. The duvet is connected to a control box that sends warmed air to the chosen side of the bed. Openings in the duvet's layer prevent moisture from building up. For cooling, in turn, the Smartduvet uses the body's natural evaporative cooling and regulates the temperature by way of increased air circulation between the body and the duvet. The Smartduvet can be ordered directly from the manufacturer and costs, depending on size, between CHF 300 and 400.-.

Light Alarm Clock

Who actually still has an alarm clock at home these days? Most people use the alarm function built into their smartphone to get them out of bed in the morning. Yet it has long been known that the high-frequency electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones can have a negative effect on sleep quality, which is why it is recommended to remove mobile devices from the bedroom at night. A gentler alternative to a conventional alarm clock is a light alarm clock, which simulates sunset and sunrise and is meant to make falling asleep and waking up easier. Scientific studies have shown that in light, wakefulness-promoting hormones such as cortisol are produced, while in darkness more sleep hormones such as melatonin are produced and released. By simulating sunrise, a light alarm clock can therefore enable a gentler awakening, especially during the winter. In the evening, in turn, the dimming light helps the body wind down and fall asleep more easily.

Control and time settings work, depending on the device, via an app. A wide variety of models are available on the market, with more or fewer additional functions such as measuring room temperature, humidity, and noise and light factors that can affect sleep. There are also alarm clocks with sleep and wake-up audio, such as birdsong. Daylight alarm clocks are available from around CHF 30.-

Dodow

Anyone plagued mainly by frequently waking up in the middle of the night may find help in the Dodow. The gadget is meant to help you fall back asleep faster by way of guided breathing exercises. To do this, the device projects a colored cone of light onto the ceiling that changes rhythmically. Focusing on it and synchronizing your breathing with the light is said to calm the autonomic nervous system and thus make falling asleep easier.

This sleep gadget is available for around CHF 69.-.
