Bedroom Ideas for Better Sleep
Especially in winter, when it is dark and cold outside, we like to spend a little more time at home in the evenings. All the better, then, if you can create a wellness oasis within your own four walls that promises calm and relaxation. The bedroom in particular deserves attention – after all, we spend around a third of our lives in it. But what belongs in a bedroom, and how should you choose its colors? What role does the room climate play? Here are our tips for the perfect bedroom.
What Belongs in a Bedroom – and What Doesn't?
When furnishing your bedroom, it should not just be about creating a place to sleep, but also a personal retreat. You can achieve this by not overloading your bedroom with too much furniture and too many objects. Especially in very small bedrooms, you could – if possible – move the wardrobe into another room. This helps you avoid a cramped feeling when falling asleep. The desk in particular ideally has no place in the bedroom. That way, you won't be reminded of your work just before falling asleep. Since your room should be a place of retreat and calm, that is, a place where you can escape everyday stress and constant background noise, electronic devices such as computers, laptops, or televisions don't belong here either. Also avoid clutter in your bedroom. A tidy bedroom can convey calm and lightness just before falling asleep. If you have to store many items in the bedroom for lack of space, it is best to stow them in color-coordinated chests, decorative boxes, baskets, or crates.
But what is an absolute must in the bedroom? A bed system that is matched to your needs and to the bedroom. Get advice from us in our showroom about your bed system and the right mattress, or read more in our blog posts about the right firmness level and the pros and cons of box-spring beds.
More Ambience – How to Style Your Bedroom
An important factor for a pleasant atmosphere in the bedroom is the lighting: complement the harsh ceiling lamp with a dimmable floor or standing lamp. Carefully chosen bedside lamps can also create a cozy ambience. In any case, make sure their light is soft, warm, or muted. If you like, you can also transform your room into a snug, homey den with indirect light sources or, here and there, candles. Besides lighting, the choice of colors in your room also makes an essential contribution to a pleasant, feel-good atmosphere: furnish your bedroom with subtle and, ideally, rather warm colors – this applies to the decor too, by the way. Colors that have a calming and relaxing effect include, for example, muted shades of pink, violet, green, or blue, as well as soft earth tones such as gray, beige, chocolate, or taupe. Do not leave everything to chance when furnishing the room; instead, pay attention to a harmonious color concept, well-chosen furniture, and soft textiles. Empty white walls, for instance, often look bare. So hang up pictures that spark good feelings in you or help you relax. The same goes for the floor: a carefully chosen rug radiates cozy warmth and instantly makes the atmosphere in your room much more pleasant.
Optimal Room Climate for Better Sleep
So that you can fall asleep easily in the evening and benefit from better sleep at night, it pays to keep an eye on the room temperature and humidity in your bedroom: an optimized room temperature and humidity can indeed promote good sleep. Even though it may be a little warmer in the other living rooms, especially in winter, the bedroom temperature should not be too high. Ideally, your bedroom is between 16 and 18°C. If you tend to feel the cold, 20°C is also fine – but no more. Otherwise, melatonin production is negatively affected, which can disrupt the day-night rhythm.
The ideal room humidity in your bedroom is 40-60%. This value can, incidentally, rise by up to 10% overnight due to moist breath, sweat, and imperceptible perspiration. That is why it is important to air your bedroom out well in the morning. The stale, used-up air should make way for fresh morning air. In winter, allow around 10 minutes for a burst of airing; in summer, better around 20 minutes. The same applies in the evening: air the room out thoroughly once more for at least 5-10 minutes before going to bed. This brings fresh air into the bedroom – a basic prerequisite for better sleep.
Should You Furnish the Bedroom With or Without Plants?
Opinions differ on whether plants belong in the bedroom. The answer is: "It depends...". Plants can indeed increase the humidity in a room. So if your room already has elevated humidity, you should do without plants. Strongly scented plants are also not ideal in the bedroom, as depending on the species they can even cause headaches. Plants such as snake plants, aloe vera, or parlor palms, on the other hand, are right at home in the bedroom and can be factored in when furnishing the room: they filter pollutants out of the air. Succulents such as the jade plant or houseleek release at night the oxygen they produced during the day. These plants can therefore have a positive effect on your sleep quality and can accordingly be placed in the bedroom without any concerns.
Conclusion
When it comes to good sleep, the aspect of bedroom design plays an essential role. The bedroom should be a place of calm – a place where you can unwind from everyday life in the evening and fall asleep relaxed. Clutter can accordingly have an unfavorable effect on falling asleep, while soft lighting, rugs, and pictures, among other things, create a cozy ambience and can make falling asleep easier. Keep your bedroom tidy and fresh – and look forward to better sleep. If you have questions about the right bed system, we are happy to advise you in our showroom in Bischofszell.
