Treat yourself to Swiss sheep at bedtime

Good sleep means quality of life and vitality. An important role in falling and staying asleep is played by the conditions you create for sleeping. These include the right room temperature, optimal darkening, and a mattress perfectly matched to your own needs – for good regeneration of body and brain during the night and a refreshed, rested awakening in the morning. For mattresses that ensure optimal hygienic and climatic conditions in bed while offering the highest comfort, manufacturer BICO processes around 42 tonnes of Swiss sheep's wool from Swisswool each year, thereby supporting the protection of the Swiss Alpine region. Natural and healthy sleep

Sheep's wool is a centuries-old raw material that, thanks to its special properties, provides perfect regulation of body temperature. Wool fibres are hollow and can therefore absorb moisture and release it again without feeling wet. Wool is also notable for its breathability and enables good air circulation. Integrated into a mattress, wool thus ensures optimal thermal conditions during sleep – for a pleasantly warm and dry bed all year round. Two further advantages of sheep's wool are its durability and easy cleaning: wool can be kept hygienically clean simply by regular airing and beating out, with no chemical cleaning required. And because wool hair is genetically very similar to human hair, allergies to this raw material are very rare.

It all starts with the sheep

No wonder, then, that this valuable natural product has long been used in many different ways, for example in the textile industry. For a very long time, however, the wool of Swiss sheep was simply thrown away or burned, since regional sheep farmers had no use for it. That's because raw material and wool products were imported almost exclusively from abroad – partly for reasons of price, and partly because of the very robust quality of Swiss wool, which is difficult to process. This wool is fairly coarse, because it also has to protect mountain sheep in extreme weather conditions. Turning such raw material into soft, pleasant products requires special know-how and a great deal of effort.

And then came Swisswool

Ten years ago, Swisswool found a solution to this "problem". It promotes the use of regional wool resources, processes the raw materials in an environmentally friendly way, and makes them available under the "Swisswool" label for further processing into various products – such as mattress toppers. Anyone who chooses Swisswool is using a sustainable, renewable natural raw material and supporting landscape conservation in the Swiss mountains. The label guarantees the regional origin of the wool.

Swissness in bed – in the mattress and in the box spring bed

The valuable Swiss sheep's wool is collected twice a year by Swisswool during shearing season, directly from Swiss shepherds, at 25 collection points specially set up for this purpose across Switzerland. The wool is then pressed and washed, and processed into nonwoven fabric by the company Baur Vliesstoffe – a long-standing partner of BICO.

BICO has used wool for the covers of its foam mattresses since it began manufacturing them. Since Swisswool was founded in 2009, however, BICO has relied entirely on Swiss wool from Swisswool. It is used in two different quality grades for all mattresses in the main collection. The material is certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® (baby class), and all covers are washable at 60° Celsius.

The BICO box spring range is likewise entirely dedicated to Switzerland and its valuable resources. The wool pressed into the headboard has a positive effect on the acoustics in the bedroom, ensuring a pleasantly quiet sleeping atmosphere. The bed is optionally available covered in traditional loden fabric and with wooden elements and feet made of Swiss Arolla pine, making it a symbol of Switzerland's diverse and valuable nature.
