The Swiss Alpine sheep – or why BICO relies on Swisswool

Burning or throwing away tonnes of virgin wool from Swiss Alpine sheep? What is unthinkable today was reality around ten years ago. Interest in Swiss virgin sheep's wool was low – cheap wool was imported from abroad instead. Swisswool, however, saw things differently: the company supports Swiss mountain farmers and their sheep. BICO knows about the natural properties of wool that cannot be replicated synthetically, and has been processing around 42 tonnes of Swiss wool a year into mattress toppers and box spring beds since the initiative began. Thousands of people across Switzerland therefore sleep on a natural, sustainable base material that is, on top of everything, 100% biodegradable, and that regulates moisture and neutralizes odours and pollutants.

A blessing in disguise – or how BICO found its new wood producer

When a fire destroyed BICO's in-house wood department, it became clear that von Rickenbach could supply the solid wood components needed. As the family business from the Muotathal proved equal to BICO's high standards of sustainability, quality and care, a long-term partnership developed between the two Swiss companies. To this day, the wood specialists from Schwyz supply solid wood for a wide range of components – as well as inspiration for further innovations. BICO places great importance on the quality of its products and takes care to source wood from sustainably managed forests. Fabrics from Eastern Switzerland – or what BICO and Tisca have in common

The textile industry of Eastern Switzerland is an important chapter in Swiss export history. For centuries, families made their living from the trade and production of textiles. Today, only a few weaving mills remain in Switzerland. One of them is Tisca, an independent, family-run company from the Appenzell region. Its hallmark is the quality and longevity of its products – just like BICO's. Just as the mattress manufacturer continuously checks and refines the quality of its mattresses in its own in-house sleep lab, Tisca carries out its own factory production controls in its internal laboratory. That is probably why the partnership has run so smoothly for close to 60 years. The fact that Nauer and BICO are so well matched also shows in the mattress cores they develop together: alongside BICO, the foam manufacturer creates first-class mattress cores whose material durability is around 40% higher than that of conventional foam – while using almost half the raw material. Beyond that, BICO relies on foam because the high-tech material achieves optimal temperature regulation, reaches top hygiene ratings, and can be adjusted with millimetre precision for ergonomic support. This is because the foam can be varied in terms of foam quality and its construction and cutting techniques, and can therefore be developed specifically to meet particular needs. So anyone who owns a BICO mattress sleeps on Nauer's cold foam and benefits accordingly from first-class body contouring, optimal bed hygiene, strong support and long service life.
