About the brand

BICO is a Swiss sleep brand from Schänis in the canton of St. Gallen. Its history begins in 1861 with the founding of Birchler & Co. in Reichenburg, which made upholstery wadding and virgin sheep's wool for mattresses. In 1962 BICO introduced “Isabelle”, the first foam mattress without steel springs in Switzerland, in 1972 the bico-flex slatted frame and in 2003 the ClimaLuxe mattress with plastic spring elements. Since 2001 BICO has belonged to the Swedish Hilding Anders Group; the manufacturer is Hilding Anders Switzerland AG in Schänis.

The BICO mattresses of the BICO and Isabelle lines are made in Schänis (SG), with a high proportion of handwork and from raw materials from local suppliers. BICO sources raw materials from domestic suppliers wherever possible. Several models, such as ClimaLuxe, ClimaMaster and VitaClass, have a padding layer with Swisswool, the virgin wool of Swiss mountain sheep. The BICO basics are a line of their own with the origin “Made in Europe”: models #01 to #04 are made in a sister plant and carry the country of origin Croatia, model #05 carries the country of origin Switzerland. The Isabelle and BICO basics ranges are made from vegan materials; for the Isabelle mattresses BICO offers a cover with Swisswool (virgin wool) as an alternative to the climate cover.

In the BICO mattresses ClimaLuxe and ClimaMaster, BICO's metal-free TBS plastic spring technology is at work: the graduated spring travel first relieves pressure, then supports; a three-dimensional ventilation system provides airflow and moisture exchange. The ClimaMaster comes with a Master cover and a removable topper, both washable at 60 °C. The BodyMaster relies on Embrace Technology with elastic TruFeel foam, the IsabelleFine on a SoftAdapt gel foam, the VitaClass on zoned EvoPore HRC cold foam.

Every mattress of the BICO and Isabelle lines is tested in BICO's Good Night’s SleepLab and certified by the independent Centre for Occupational Medicine, Ergonomics and Hygiene (AEH), a spin-off of ETH Zurich; bed climate, hygiene, ergonomics and durability are assessed. Their covers have a natural, probiotic-based mite protection and are washable at 60 °C. Most BICO mattresses come in three to four firmness levels from soft to firm, some models also in extra firm. In the study “Swiss Brand of the Year – Schweizer Marken-Monitor” by the Swiss Institute for Quality Tests (SIQT), an online survey of consumers, BICO was test winner three times for slatted frames in the 2023/24 edition, six times in 2024/25 and four times in 2025/26, among others in the categories Quality mattresses and Customer satisfaction mattresses.

At Deluxe Sleep you will find BICO mattresses of the Clima, Body, Isabelle and Vita lines as well as the BICO basics models #01 to #05. There are also slatted bases, including the bico-flex slatted frames, which received the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award in 2022, toppers, mattress pads and pillows. Depending on the model, we carry the mattresses of the Clima, Body, Isabelle and Vita lines in widths from 80 to 200 cm and lengths from 190 to 220 cm, and our 100-night core exchange applies to them. Our sleep advisor shows you which model suits you; you will find an overview of all currently available BICO products further down this page.

Frequently asked questions

Where are BICO mattresses made?

The mattresses of the BICO and Isabelle lines are made in Schänis (SG) with a high proportion of handwork from raw materials from local suppliers. The BICO basics are “Made in Europe”: models #01 to #04 carry the country of origin Croatia, model #05 the country of origin Switzerland.

What is the difference between BICO, Isabelle and BICO basics?

Isabelle has been the name of a BICO foam mattress since 1962 and, since 2020, the name of a complete BICO mattress range; the mattresses of both ranges are made in Schänis (SG). BICO basics is a compact entry-level range whose models #01 to #04 are made in a sister plant in another European country.

Which firmness is right for me?

The right firmness depends on your body shape and your personal feel. Most BICO mattresses come in three to four firmness levels: soft, medium and firm, some models also in extra firm (BICO calls them soft, medium, dura and extra dura). The BICO basics models #01 and #02 come in medium; #03 and #04 are reversible, medium on one side, firm on the other; #05 is rotatable, not reversible, and sits between medium and firm. Our online sleep advisor gives you a first orientation; we advise you in person in our showroom in Bischofszell.

Are there BICO mattresses without metal?

Yes. BICO has developed its own metal-free plastic spring technology (TBS), which creates the springy comfort without metal across the whole sleeping surface; mattresses with a foam core also have a sleeping surface without metal. Zip eyelets or individual tiny parts are made of metal.

Which materials and technologies does BICO use?

In ClimaLuxe and ClimaMaster, TBS spring elements work with a three-dimensional ventilation system; the ClimaMaster has a studded EvoPore VHRC top plate. The BodyMaster uses Embrace Technology with elastic TruFeel foam, the IsabelleFine a SoftAdapt gel foam, the VitaClass zoned EvoPore HRC cold foam. ClimaLuxe, ClimaMaster and VitaClass have a padding layer with Swisswool, the wool of Swiss mountain sheep.

How do I care for my BICO mattress?

Air the mattress, duvet and pillow every time you get up. Mattresses with a reversible construction are turned regularly, rotatable models are also rotated lengthwise. Wash the cover about once a year: the covers of the BICO and Isabelle lines are washable at 60 °C, those of the BICO basics at 40 °C; the mattress core itself is not washable. For hygiene reasons it is advisable to replace the mattress after 8 to 10 years at the latest and a topper after 5 to 6 years.

How much does delivery of BICO products cost at Deluxe Sleep?

On orders of CHF 100 or more we deliver free of charge within Switzerland and to Liechtenstein to the kerbside; below that, shipping is CHF 8.90. Smaller items are shipped by parcel courier, larger products by freight carrier. Delivery into your home including assembly and removal of the packaging material can be added as an option for a flat CHF 149 per order (not for orders that contain only pillows). In Bischofszell you can collect the goods free of charge by appointment. All terms are on our page “Delivery, Returns & Disposal”.

Can I change the firmness of my BICO mattress afterwards?

Yes, for BICO mattresses of the Clima, Body, Isabelle and Vita lines: in our shop they are marked “100-night core exchange”. Within 100 nights of delivery we exchange the mattress core for a core in a different firmness; the cover and the mattress stay the same. A handling fee of CHF 200 applies per core exchange; a refund or an exchange of the whole mattress is excluded. The core exchange does not apply to the BICO basics or to the baby and children's mattresses. All terms are on our page “100-night core exchange”.
